Vectura's novel erectile dysfunction treatment enters clinical trials in Europe
Vectura Limited, the UK-based speciality pharmaceuticals company, announced today the initiation of patient screening and enrolment into a Phase IIa clinical study for its product, VR004, for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (ED).
The study will evaluate the profile of a number of dosage strengths of VR004 in patients with mild to moderate ED.The pharmaceutical compound formulated in VR004 has been the subject of a number of published clinical trials, where efficacy and safety in ED have been confirmed. However, the Vectura study will be the first where this compound has been delivered through the lungs. It is anticipated that drugs delivered though the lungs will have a faster onset of action than drugs delivered orally.
Vectura's CEO, Peter Virley, commented, "This first Vectura-sponsored clinical trial is a significant milestone in our evolution from a technology-based to a products-based company. We are very excited about the prospects for VR004, which has the potential to offer real clinical advantages in a large, rapidly-growing market where not all patients' needs are currently well-served."
Peter Keen of Merlin Biosciences and a Vectura Board member added "Merlin has been a backer of Vectura's leading edge formulation and delivery technology from its early days. Vectura is working on a number of pharmaceutical partners compounds, VR004 is an exciting opportunity to utilise its technology solely for it's own account."
